Nato e cresciuto nello Zimbawe, Alexander McCall Smith (Bulawayo, Zimbawe - ex Rhodesia - 24 agosto 1948) si è trasferito in Scozia dove ha studiato diritto e dove vive ancora oggi. Alla fine degli anni ’90 ha cominciato a scrivere originali e curiosi romanzi gialli con protagonista Precious Ramotswe, investigatrice privata della “N. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” diventata
serie TV nel 2008. Oltre a questa serie McCall Smith ha creato altre 3 serie di romanzi: “44 Scotland Street”, “Sunday Philosophy Club” con Isabel Dalhousie, “The 2½ Pillars of Wisdom” con Moritz-Maria Von Igelfield) e ha scritto anche libri per ragazzi.
